Guidance for Visual Arts Portfolios

Applicants to pre-college, foundation and undergraduate programs in the visual arts are often required to submit a portfolio. This is very often the case for selective programs in fine arts, illustration, photography, design, fashion, architecture, animation, film and television, game design, and digital media production and similar disciplines and areas of study. The portfolio can be a key factor in admissions to these programs as they reveal the applicant's technical skills, visual thinking, creativity, and potential as a participant in that program.
Additionally, many universities value students who contribute their creative talents to university arts programs and the campus community, regardless of their major area of study. As part of the admission process, they invite applicants to include a portfolio of their creative work as a supplement to their undergraduate application.
In these optional portfolios, an applicant might include a collection of their creative work to communicate to admissions readers their commitment, skill level and creativity.
