Netherlands to limit university programs taught in English

Maastricht University has discontinued its Foundation Programme. The university announced earlier this year, “The Dutch universities have been instructed by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science to limit the intake of international students and this has, unfortunately, resulted in the cancellation of the Foundation Programme.” The a program was designed for international students to earn sufficient requirements to pursue undergraduate study at Maastricht University.

This measure is one of many being undertaken in the Netherlands to balance efforts of Dutch universities to internationalize, and a scarcity of housing and programs for Dutch students.

As reported in The Pie news in February, "Fourteen universities in The Netherlands have announced plans to limit the number of English-taught degrees and reduce international student enrolment in an effort to prioritise the Dutch language and relieve pressure on student accommodation."

Currently, 25% of students pursuing higher education in the Netherlands are international.
