When is the deadline? Application Windows by Country

Many Brazilian students naturally wonder about application deadlines if they are considering universities outside of Brazil. While the answer may seem frustratingly vague - "it depends" - it's essential to understand how application timelines are different from the Brazilian one .

In Brazil, the process is straightforward: graduate high school, participate in the selective process (SISU), and then begin university. However, in other countries, the process varies significantly. Applications often are sent while students are still in high school, often nearly a year in advance of their first semester at university.

To illustrate these differences, consider the chart outlining application windows, high school graduation dates, and university academic year beginnings across popular study destinations.

Observe that many countries offer more than one application window, or have varying deadlines. A a rule of thumb, more competitive programs have earlier deadlines, as is the case with numerus fixus programs in the Netherlands. Also, admissions chances may be higher at selective programs, as is the case with many universities with fall deadlines in the US.

The chart illustrates general reference points that vary from institution to institution. Just as there are many more university pathways beyond SISU in Brazil, there are many specific opportunities that this chart cannot illustrate. It is meant as a starting point to comprehend the differences across borders, hemispheres, education systems and university placements.

What can this mean for you?

For students still in Ensino Médio, start now by researching programs, preparing academically, completing necessary testing, and gathering required documentation for the next application cycle. The earlier you start, the more time you have to prepare.

For students who have already graduated, don’t focus on the deadlines that have already passed. Look forward to the next cycle and use the free time you have now to prepare.

It is unwise to rush an application to a program you haven't looked into, or scramble together an essay last minute just to meet a deadline. It is better to allow time to research programs and build a list of options that meet your academic, personal and financial needs. Get started well before the deadline. This will allow you to put together your best application.

Applying early in the application cycle can offer other benefits. Often there are more spots available in programs that use rolling admissions, and more opportunities for scholarships and financial aid may be available.
